Project Update | In the Mountain Kingdom of Africa—Lesotho, Tongyong Environmental Protection Group Safeguards Every Drop of Safe Water

2026-06-26

Recently, a key livelihood project led by the Lesotho Ministry of Natural Resources, funded by the World Bank, and constructed by China International Water & Electric Corp.—the Lesotho Lowlands Water Development Project Phase II (LLWDP-II) Leribe District Water Supply Project (hereinafter referred to as the "Leribe District Water Supply Project")—has reached new milestones in construction. As the core equipment supplier and installation & commissioning service provider for this project, TongYong Environmental Protection Group has rooted its professional on-site service team at the highland frontline, working side by side with engineers from various countries, providing full-process equipment installation guidance and system commissioning services, fully ensuring the efficient advancement of the project and helping the water environment construction of the "Mountain Kingdom of Africa" reach a new level.

Project Overview

Lesotho is known as the "Switzerland of Africa," yet due to its unique geographical environment and underdeveloped infrastructure, it has long faced a shortage of high-quality drinking water resources. To thoroughly resolve this fundamental livelihood issue, the Leribe District Water Supply Project was officially launched.

After Tongyong Environmental Protection Group formally signed the contract with the Leribe District Water Supply Project, deep mutual trust between the two parties was quietly established. To ensure the project's high-standard implementation, the Kingdom of Lesotho specially dispatched the project manager responsible for the project, Mathealira Paul Lerotholi, to personally lead a delegation to China for a 13-day in-depth inspection.

During this period, the delegation conducted comprehensive and multi-dimensional on-site research at Tongyong Environmental Protection Group's headquarters, as well as at relevant supporting manufacturers and manufacturing bases. Tongyong Environmental Protection Group's solid technical foundation, advanced manufacturing processes, and strict quality inspection system received high praise from the delegation, injecting strong confidence and assurance into the smooth installation and commissioning of on-site equipment today.

Upon completion, this project (Phase 2A) will achieve a designed capacity of 27,500 cubic meters of water supply per day, with ample space reserved for future expansion to 75,000 cubic meters per day (long-term planning), completely transforming the water usage history of local residents.

Process Flow

The Leribe District Water Supply Project strictly follows international high-standard design specifications, adopts mature and reliable conventional water treatment processes, and has been optimized in a targeted manner based on the characteristics of Lesotho's local raw water quality. Through precise equipment selection and installation, Tongyong Environmental Protection Group ensures efficient operation throughout the entire process from water intake to water supply.

Core Process Flow:

Full-Process Analysis:

Pretreatment and Desanding:

Raw water is lifted by low-lift pumping stations, then sequentially passes through cyclone desanders and pre-sedimentation tanks, utilizing physical sedimentation principles to efficiently remove large particulate sand and mud from the water, effectively reducing the operational load on subsequent treatment units;

Enhanced Coagulation and Sedimentation:

Polyaluminum chloride (PAC) and potassium permanganate are precisely dosed in pipeline mixers, enhancing manganese and iron removal while promoting flocculation reactions, then entering coagulation-sedimentation tanks for efficient mud-water separation;

Filtration and Disinfection:

After sedimentation, the supernatant flows through V-type filter chambers for deep interception, further reducing effluent turbidity; the effluent enters contact tanks where sodium hypochlorite is dosed for strict disinfection, ensuring microbiological indicators meet drinking water hygiene standards;

Sludge Harmless Disposal:

Sludge generated by the system is uniformly collected into sludge tanks for centralized storage and stabilization treatment, achieving safe waste disposal and ensuring full-process environmental friendliness and ecological safety.

On-Site Challenges

This project holds great significance for local ecological restoration and residents' health. Tongyong Environmental Protection Group's professional team provided full-process oversight to ensure every piece of equipment is precisely installed in a foreign land.

Efficient Cross-National Team Collaboration:
Established regular technical coordination mechanisms with supervisors and construction engineers from multiple countries including Italy, South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Lesotho, overcoming language and standard differences to complete high-precision installation and commissioning of all systems;

Strict Standards Controlling Every Detail:
Strictly implemented multiple procedures including equipment unpacking acceptance, installation process review, and concealed works inspection, ensuring every procedure meets design and contract requirements;

Racing Against Time Day and Night to Seize Progress:
The team rationally allocated resources, working overtime to complete linked commissioning of core equipment across multiple areas including dosing rooms, flocculation-sedimentation tanks, filtration systems, and disinfection units, creating conditions for subsequent water supply operation.

Outlook

The implementation of this project will significantly enhance high-quality water supply capacity in Lesotho's lowland areas, effectively eliminating local health hazards caused by the lack of clean water sources. In the future, with large-scale water supply operation, safe tap water will not only reach thousands of households locally, but will also fundamentally eliminate various diseases caused by unclean drinking water, building a solid defense for regional public health and greatly enhancing local residents' sense of happiness and fulfillment, achieving a beautiful vision of ecological and livelihood prosperity together.
